The record the pilot starts from
Every pilot calculation starts from the basic empty weight and CG in the aircraft’s weight-and-balance record. When equipment is installed, removed or altered, maintenance computes the new empty weight and CG — or reweighs the aircraft — and updates that record.
An out-of-date record makes every later calculation wrong, however carefully it is done.
